Travel Tips
On The Road
New Zealand Driving Tips Driving is a great way to see our beautiful
country, but before you hit the road there are a few things you should
be aware of when driving in New Zealand:
- We drive on the
left hand side of the road and use right-hand drive vehicles. The
easiest way to remember is the driver is always on the centre line.
- We have a unique give way rule at intersections. Left-turning traffic gives way to right-turning traffic.
- Hilly,
narrow or winding roads means that your journey may take longer than
you expect. The geography also means you can enjoy some spectacular
scenery, so plan for a few stops along the way.
- Driving while
using a mobile phone will soon be illegal in New Zealand. Please
refrain from using a mobile phone or device while driving a Yourway
rental car.
- In cities, towns, and villages the speed limit is
50 kilometres per hour, while on the open road and motorways the speed
limit is 100 kilometres per hour.
- Universally recognised road signs are used throughout New Zealand.

Travelling Between the North and South Islands If
you travel between the North and South Islands you must take your
rental car across Cook Strait on an inter-island ferry. As well as
transporting you and your vehicle, the three hour journey showcases the
extraordinary beauty of the Marlborough Sounds - sightings of dolphins,
whales and fur seals are common, making this our most famous ferry
route.
For ferry bookings and full details on sailing times, please visit Interislander or Bluebridge.
